You are invited to join the
delegation of over 25 healthcare professionals from Jamaica and their colleagues
from the Jamaican Diaspora and Friends of Jamaica at a forum in Minnesota
November 4-6, 2010. The purpose of the forum is to develop the framework to
engage members of the Jamaican Diaspora and Friends of Jamaica to aid in the
development of the healthcare delivery system in Jamaica. A key outcome of the
forum is a five year plan to integrate the outreach efforts of the Diaspora and
Friends of Jamaica into the strategic plan of the Ministry of Health, the
academic institutions and other healthcare associations and institutions in
Jamaica.
The forum is hosted under
the distinguished patronage of Hon. Geneive Brown Metzger, Consul General of
Jamaica, New York and Hon. Sandra Grant Griffiths, Consul General of Jamaica,
Miami in association with the Jamaican Diaspora Advisory Board, the Jamaican
Diaspora Institute, the Jamaican Diaspora Foundation, the Ministry of Health and
the University of the West Indies Faculty of Medical Sciences. The Organization
for International Development (OID), New York, The Jamaica Nurses Group of New
York Inc., and the Organization for Strategic Development in Jamaica (OSDJ),
Minnesota will play the lead role in coordinating the forum.

First Recipient of the Barry Wint
Memorial Scholarship

Annikie (center), a final year student and the University of the West Indies
School of Nursing (UWISON) is the first recipient of the Barry Wint Memorial
Scholarship. She was awarded a check for JA$100,000.00 at a ceremony to
mark the occasion on March 26, 2010 at UWISON. The award was presented by
Mrs. Yvonne Wint, widow of Dr. Barry Wint and instructor at the School of
Nursing. other members of the Wint family and faculty from UWISON were
also present to the ceremony.
We are grateful to Mrs. Yvonne Wint and family for giving us the permission to launch the Barry Wint Memorial Fund. The fund will be used to provide scholarships to medical, nurses and public health students in Jamaica and to aid in the infrastructure development of medical facilities in Jamaica.

The Williamsfield Skills Training
Center
The
long awaited Williamsfield Skill Training Center is set to begin offering its
first class, "Webpage Design and Hosting" in June 2010.
Thanks to St. Paul Academy for donating the laptops that will be used to start
the training program and to The American Friends of Jamaica for the financial
assistance to cover some of the costs for getting the center ready for opening
day.
Thanks also to
Dr. Auma Folkes and her team of volunteers for their tireless effort in getting
the project off the ground. Thanks to the many volunteers and those
who have donated funds to OSDJ and the Williamsfield Skills Training
Center Committee for this project. The first batch of students are currently
registering for class which is set to begin in June 2010.
